Will plastikote plastic spray paint adhere well to a steering wheel?

The steering wheel in question is from a 1999 vw polo. I am respraying the Interior (dashboard, central console etc) and wondering whether the slightly worn steering wheel will look good sprayed or awful. Opinions? No rude comments please.

ThanksWill plastikote plastic spray paint adhere well to a steering wheel?
If you spray it the paint will then be all over your hands regardless of with make of paint you use, good or bad. Only suggestion is a steering wheel glove from you local motor accs shop. Sheep skin ones are nice , you can get synthetic ones as well now, Bahhh. Will plastikote plastic spray paint adhere well to a steering wheel?
If you're considering spraying the actual rim of the wheel, DON'T - it'll be pretty slippery %26amp; chip off easily.
just get a steering wheel cover, the leather one's are nice and you can probably get one you will like better than just painting it
I would think awful but it is down to personal taste better To get a steering wheel cover they come in all colors and materials so something should match the interior you are creating
Plastikote will stick to the steering wheel, but if you wear a ring it will probably scratch off.

Ja.
your whole interior will look awful

just keep it the way it is

  • Can I use a high heat spray paint to rehab the grates on my gas cook top?

My grates are looking a little worn, and repeated scrubbing of the surface has taken off some of the black paint. A set of new grates costs over $200. Can I just use a high heat spray paint (like those formulated for grills) to make them look new again? Thanks. Can I use a high heat spray paint to rehab the grates on my gas cook top?
That should work. Just make sure you have every last speck of grease removed, or the paint won't stick. Can I use a high heat spray paint to rehab the grates on my gas cook top?
yes, you can use high heat paint, just make sure it's for grille's.. scrape and sand degrease before you prime and paint.

What will remove spray paint from a vehicle?

Someone spray painted my girlfriends car! Is there any household product or anything in general that removes spray paint from vehicles? Thanks! What will remove spray paint from a vehicle?
Paint thinner will remove spray paint. You need a about a gallon of thinner and a whole lot of clean rags. Wipe the thinner on a small area and dry it off right away with a dry rag. You may want to try this first on a spot where it can,t be seen to make sure it does'nt harm the original paint. It takes awhile and is messy but it does work. What will remove spray paint from a vehicle?
Try MOTHERS CLAY BAR. You will have to work at it, but it should take it off. Wal-Mart might have it, otherwise try Advance Auto.

It comes in a kit with a spray cleaner... and you just have to work the paint off with the clay bar.

If this fails you will have to try some more abrasive products.... I would be afraid paint thinner could harm the original paint or clear coat.... but you could give it a try in a small area.

I'd try to clay bar first though.
I'm not sure if Permatex remover will also take the underlying car paint off as well:

How can I spray paint words onto a shirt?

II play on usinga plain white t shirt and black fabric spray paint ans stencils will this work out good? and will it stay on in the wash? How can I spray paint words onto a shirt?
They weren't terribly helpful, were they? Anyway, as you may already have planned on doing, it works best if you cut out a cardboard shape or two of your t-shirt first. Use one to make sure your design will work. Pencil it in, so to speak, and check your layout. Make any adjustments

Then, before you paint, slide a cardboard cutout into the shirt so the paint from the front doesn't seep through to get on the back. It'll also help it dry better.

Check the package on your paint for washing instructions. Be sure you get fabric paint, of course. Some fabric paints will dry in 24 hours, but won't truly cure (set permanently) for 48-72 hours. If you wash it too early, you're sunk. Check the instructions carefully, watching for the difference between drying and curing. Some don't use the word 'cure,' since it's unfamiliar to some folks; they say ';don't wash the garment for 72 hours.'; Read carefully, and you'll be fine with it.How can I spray paint words onto a shirt?
    Use stencils
You simply get spray paint and spray!

How long does it take for spray paint to dry?

I want to spray paint some cardboard silver for a project I'm doing. I've gone over the cardboard with several coats of matte modpodge, and one coat of gloss, so it's basically plastic now. How long should it take for one coat of spray paint to dry?How long does it take for spray paint to dry?
One coat of spray paint should take about half an hour to dry. I spray painted a huge canvas for the backdrop theme for one of our school plays and we had to let it dry for about half an hour. It was quite dry by that time and we could handle it safely, but it was still a little sticky, especially in places that had the most paint. I would recommend you to only spray one coat at a time so that you will get the best gloss. If you spray many coats and then make it dry, it won't have such a glossy shine.

Can I apply acrylic paint over spray paint?

I have a project and my board has a lot of space to cover, so i cant use my acrylic paint for the whole thing. So i was planning on spray painting everything silver, then using acrylic point to go ove letters and other smaller areas. Will it work though? Can I apply acrylic paint over spray paint?
Yes if the spray paint is acrylic based, but no if its oil or polyurethane based.

Acrylic is plastic, so no need to protect it with sealer, it is a seler itself.

The rule is water based medium first, oil or polyurethane on top would work, but not the reverse. Can I apply acrylic paint over spray paint?
Yes, the spray paint can should indicate whether it is acrylic-based. It would be rare for spray paint to be oil-based, so you're probably fine. The clear acrylic spray over the whole thing when you're done is a good idea to protect it.
It should work but after you finish you should put a clear sealer over the whole thing.
Yes it should work for you .

How long does it take for rustoleum clear lacquer spray paint to cure?

it doesnt say a cure time on the can. just says it can be handled in 30 minutes. anyone know? How long does it take for rustoleum clear lacquer spray paint to cure?
Lacquer is a film finish that dries rather than cure. It is based on lacquer thinner, a mixture of solvents, that is very voitile. Most lacquer dries to the touch and can be handle in about a half hour. It does not fully harden for about a week though. How long does it take for rustoleum clear lacquer spray paint to cure?
    about 2 wks
The 30 minute statement is strictly for handling. Most coatings I use can be handled between 30 minutes and 4 hours but total cure is 24 hours. Humidity will also affect the cure time. The higher the humidity the longer the cure takes. Temps should be above 55 degrees also.
It is not really a lacquer. ...but a fast dry enamel.

Depends how thick you put it on, the temperature of the painting surface and air temp and moisture content.

For waxing purposes, give it 48 hours to dry thoroughly hard.

How can I make a mirror with plexiglass and spray paint?

I've tried painting plexiglass with chrome paint to get a mirror effect but can't get it to reflect well and provide the ';mirror'; effect. I don't expect it to be exaclty like a glass mirror but would like to get it somewhat close. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. How can I make a mirror with plexiglass and spray paint?
Make sure to clean the front and back and dry with a lint free rag!

Coat the back of the plexiglass with spray cooking oil.

I know this sounds wierd, but hang in there!

Apply sheets of foil to the side that was just covered with oil.

Using a large paint brush, smooth the foil over glass removing any bubbles and creating a srface that would make up you mirror.

Place the foil coated glass in a frame or any type holder where the foil can be held in place.

Good luck! How can I make a mirror with plexiglass and spray paint?
Paint the back side of it black. hang it up. get some light behind you. that should do it. good luck.
this is done all the time you go to auto parts store and ask for a plastic replacement mirror for you car and glue it on. so just keep fallowing the commercial trail til you get to the manufacture of these mirror and get a job there
Spray the back of the plexi with chrome paint. When dry, spray paint it again with matte black. Dry. Hold up the plexi so the painted side is away from you and you are looking into the unpainted surface. With good lighting, you should see the reflection. Most mirrors are ';second surface'; much like the one you just made. Special mirrors can be first or front surface mirrors with a special reflective metallic coating on the front. The glass or plexi then is simply a base for the reflective paint.

there are plants and bushes on both sides of the fence and I would like to know how to protect them. Are there any things I would need to know, such as preparing the fence? I will appreciate any advice you have to give. ThanksAny suggestions on how to spray paint a picket fence?
dollar general and other doolar stores sell plastic painters tarps for a buck and they are about 20x20ft.walmart also sells them for about 2 bucks, cover your plants with these. as for preparing the fence, go over the fence with a wire brush and paint scraper to remove all loose paint,if there are any broken or loose boards repair or replace them before painting, use a good outdoor porch and trim paint, walmart sells a good one for about 15 bucks a gallon and it has a 15 or 20 yr. warranty.Any suggestions on how to spray paint a picket fence?
Go to your applince store and get some refriderator boxes and break them open[so they are flat] slide them between the fence and the plants and pull them down slightly [with tent stakes at the bottom and twine and tent stakes at the top] you now have a cardboard shield to protect your plants while you spray paint] A more expensive version would invoulve a roll of plastic sheeting from the hardware store they sell thin plastic tarps that are 20'x 100' for painters to use while in the house to protect the carpet they could just be draped over the plants while you spray the paint.
Put a piece of ply on the opposite side, a tarp on your side. Turn the spray nozzle horizontal, and do the sides first.

How much spray paint should i buy if i want to start to learn how to graffiti?

how many cans of wut ever colors u think and how much u think it will cost? How much spray paint should i buy if i want to start to learn how to graffiti?
Let it spray! There is no clear answer as to how much, however, every artist wants to feel free to express their work as desired. Therefore, I would suggest not only including the primary colors, but also the more bold colors such as : orange, purple, hot pink, lime green. flourescent yellow. Also do NOT be afraid to use black! Throw out rules! They are only to be broken anyways. ';there are no rules in art';. :) The black is often used in graffiti to outline and accentuate. The beauty of graffiti lies, in my opinion, in it's purist form. What I mean is, do not try to capture realism, but rather paint as you feel and as you see the ';vision'; in your mind. Sometimes graffiti is considered outsider art, BUT do not let that arbitrary description influence you. Art is art! Good luck in your work. Be bold, be creative, courageous and most of all have fun! Oh, and feel free to use the least expensive paint, such as Walmart cans, that I think can be bought as low as 99 cents.

Life is short, art is long. :) Oh and ONE more thing....as a mom, I must also caution that when using spray paints, especially in a more enclosed area, you should wear a mask and try to ventilate. Pcog (the wise chemist) adds: spray paint sometimes contains toluene, which is carcinogenic. So use caution! :)How much spray paint should i buy if i want to start to learn how to graffiti?
i write and i usually go threw like 1 can wen i do a fill then i use a little bit of my outline can that includes a shadow if u have a 6 letter name i would suggest gettin 4 fill in colors(the same color) to make the fill in look good and 2 outline colors and another color to double outline

Graffiti is not very pleasant on the eye.

Please don't buy ANY spray paint as it means that someone, who cares about the way the city you live in looks, will have to clean up your mess. Try something like watercolours or just normal acrylics and paint on a piece of paper or a canvas. Rather be constructively creative.

    Leave the walls alone!

it depends if you already know what you're going to draw..if you do pick out the best colors but get only a few.. if you dont know what you are going to draw then i suggest you get big cans so if you start getting ideas you can do it again one black and any other two or three colors of your choice

  • Can i spray paint a new bike without sanding it?

If i do sand it should i start off with a lower grit? or start off with a higher grit for a smoother appearance ?Can i spray paint a new bike without sanding it?
Yes, of course. I've done it plenty of times. just check the type of paint u use b4 buying it. u may want 2 ask assisstance in a store such as Home Depot, or LowesCan i spray paint a new bike without sanding it?
I think if you spray paint it without the sanding it will look like crap. Sand the bike with higher grit then eventually go to lower smoother gits.

Edit : If you don't sand little bubbles come up and it flakes.

This is why they sand cars first cause if they didn't they would look like ****.
You should sand. Use a medium, then a fine, grit sandpaper. Seems like it would be easier to buy the bike in the right color than go to all this work.
No you will need to sand it to allow the new paint to grab on so to speak. If you don't the new paint you apply will just flake off
you should sand it or it will look bad quality.

How dangerous is working with spray paint?

I want to put a clear coat of spray paint on some jewelry I made, but the warnings on the paint say that it irritates the skin and causes all sorts of bad side effects. Is that only when the paint is wet, or is it dangerous after the paint dries too? Since it is jewelry, it would be touching my skin a lot, not like if I put it on a box or a wall. How dangerous is working with spray paint?
Make sure the spray paint can go on the jewelery. I think they have special clear coat for jewelery, if your clear spray is ok, once it is on it should be ok, people spray tables, railings, chairs all the time and sit on them, put their hands on the railings. Use a mask and latex or some kind of gloves when u spray. How dangerous is working with spray paint?
I'd check with a shop that specializes in jewelry first.
I use spray paint of all types all of the time for jewelry, decorative boxes, moldings, furniture, statuary and wrought iron. I wear a mask, try not to spray on a windy day and try to use ones that are basically fume free. I have never had any skin irritation from wearing jewelry sealed with urethane spray paint, sitting on furniture primed and painted with spray paint or handling anything I've made and sealed with it. I think while it is air borne and wet, it is more of an irritant than when dried.
they make clear coat that is water based that won't hurt you!
always wear a mask, gloves, and long sleeves. you don't want to mess artound that stuff! once dry your all good
Get the right produt and follow directions carefully.

Can I get any durable spray paint in an aerosol can?

I painted a bicycle with Rustoleum. It looked beautiful at first, but it ended up looking awful before long. You could practically scrape the stuff off with your fingernail. Is there anything out there that would be tougher? Can I get any durable spray paint in an aerosol can?
concordbridge is right, except for one thing, washing your bike wont be enough for adhesion. You have to sand it.

It's a good idea to clean the surface, but sanding is the only thing which will guarantee proper adhesion. I would suggest a fine grit sand paper (180 to 280 grit) so you don't sand through the original finish, and the sanding scratches don't show through the spray finish.

I don't care what it says on the paint label, sanding is necessary. The only reason they don't say so is because people hate sanding, so if they actually said that you have to sand, fewer people would buy their product. Can I get any durable spray paint in an aerosol can?
    Dear Reality,

I've not had real good experience with Rustoleum.

The absolute best spray paint I've used so far, and also one of the least expensive, is Krylon.

Most home supply stores carry it. Krylon also makes a water-based spray paint, but it is not as durable.

You need to make sure that the surface you are spraying it onto, is in good shape. Sand it a little, and definitely clean it well.
I think I know the problem. I have done the same thing.

Paint has two jobs to do:

    1) Provide a tough, impermeable coating

    2) Adhere to the surface underneath.

Only one is completely in your control.

The chemistry majors at the paint manufacturers have done a good job of licking the first problem, except when the EPA changed all the solvent regulations for auto paint in the early 1990s.

I suspect that you didn't do a good enough job on the surface prep.

Now you are going to have to remove all the bad paint as well as the prep the surface under it. Next time start with a pressure wash from one of those coin operated car wash places. You can even clean greasy engines with them.

the best way is to wet a rag with lacquer thinner and it will wipe right off. wear rubber gloves though cause if you're not used to it it will burn your skin. also, don't use it on fresh paint. if your paint is a few years old then you're ok.
start with paint thinner this is the weakest, then xylol, lacquer than acetone. Always start with the weakest solvent so their is a less chance of ruining the finish. If you ruin the finish just reaply a clear coat to bring back the shine
Try some old fashioned turpentine. Its mild enough to not bother the original factory finish, but should soften the new spray paint for easy removal.
You can use spray carb. cleaner. It wont hurt your original paint job. It will evaporate before it can do that.

What removes spray paint off bricks and the porch?

i spray painted something and i need to get it off the steps abd porch. i need something fast please! What removes spray paint off bricks and the porch?
http://www.paintremoval.com/What removes spray paint off bricks and the porch?
    finger nail polish remover
Do not use as solvent on the paint, it will cause the paint to dissolve and soak into the brick. In other words, NO PAINT REMOVER or toluene, mineral spirits, naphtha, lacquer thinner, Methylene Chloride, or the like.

Above all, do not ever use a high pressure cleaner on brick. It exposes the surface and renders the brick susceptible to water and freeze damage.

Get a can of Oven Cleaner and spray it onto the paint. Repeat this application at least three times over an hour period. Then take a water hose and wash it right off.

The Oven Cleaner is a caustic that will degrade the paint and cause it to ';curl'; and be easily washed off with a hose.
Paint stripper. You can get it in spray or liquid. Be very careful with this stuff and read all the instructions. If there is paint underneath the spray paint, it will take that off too. If it's a wood porch, it will take it down to bare wood.

Any latex paint and floetrol like eski lover cited. Mix the paint and conditioner(floetrol) in accordance with directions and strain the paint with a cone strainer also sold at Home Centers.
I think if I'm not mistaken , you have to thin the paint or change the spray tip
Don't thin the paint, you will ruin the finish and durability, rent a bigger compressor.
try to find krylon online and then go from there
Ya robinhood is correct. If you thin the paint go to a homedepot or lowes and go where they have the paintsprayers they have an additive that is used to thin latex paint. personally i would go to a rental shop and rent a good airless sprayer. Can i spray paint this table with out it eventually chipping off?

http://www.target.com/gp/detail-tab-popu鈥?/a>Can i spray paint this table with out it eventually chipping off?
I recently repainted my kitchen table black. I used oil based rustoleum paint with a foam brush. It takes a day or two to dry, but the finish is rock hard. And you can get it in satin, semi-gloss or high gloss, depending on how you want it to look. It also comes in sev. colors. Walmart has alot of colors available now.Can i spray paint this table with out it eventually chipping off?
Try spraying it with Krylon Fusion.
two coats of primer before the paint then lite coats of paint until its evenly covered this will prevent runs and drips allow at least 45 minutes between coats then a few coats of clear lacquer applied as stated above use good quality products
No, it will eventually chip. Now that that is said, making the paint job last as long as possible is mostly in the preparation. If the finish is glossy, but not chipped or scratched unduly you can use a product called liquid sandpaper instead of the sanding. Wipe it on and it will etch the old paint enough for the new paint to get a good grip. And do paint with several light coats to get the best effect.
It looks like it may have a glossy finish on it. You should lightly sand with 200 grit sand paper before painting to dull the finish. This will allow the new paint to stick better.
it's all in the prep! it chips cause it didnt adhear. the table needs to be light sanded for a job you'll be proud of. use a medium to fine grade sand paper and just sand a small spot to get the feel of what it will take. you're only trying to take off the shine, not expose bare wood. they have a chemicle deglosser out there that may work fine I just avoid them as I dont want any chance of a reaction with my paint. make sure to light sand even around the edges of the mirror. as I said paint bonding is important.

I have a perfectly good fridge, but I want to change the color. Is spraying my fridge a mistake? Also has anyone heard of Thomas liquid stainless steel , does it work?Does appliance spray paint really work?
When appliances are manufactured, the paint is applied as a powdercoat. They apply a positive electrical charge to the chassis and spray negatively charged enamel paint powder on it. They then bake the enamel on by placing the chassis into an oven. This is why original appliance paint is so thick, yet it covers so uniformly.

If you then come along and spray something like an enamel appliance paint over that, it won't have the same thickness and durability as the original powdercoat enamel. The best way to describe it, I guess, is that it comes out looking like a car that was painted over with Krylon or something. You can change the color. But, you won't get the original uniform finish.Does appliance spray paint really work?
I used the tried and true metal spray paint (Rustolium, sp?) on an avocado range hood, changed to soft white gloss. Worked great.

Do be careful of over spray and ventilation. As big as a frig, you might want to hang an old shower curtain behind as you spray. Don't forget to clean, clean, clean all the dirt and grease from it before spraying. Prep time took longer than actual paint time for my range hood.

How do you combine two spray paint cans?

    Hey guys,

I'm working on a project that needs a very specific color, and said color isn't produced commercially. I have the two cans of spray paint that would produce it, but I know if I ty to spray them together (at the same time) it'll just give me the two colors next to each other or on top of one another.

Is there any device or method to combine the two spray paint streams so they mix?

Thanks! How do you combine two spray paint cans?

Can I expect Enamel spray paint to last alot of usage if sprayed onto an Xbox 360 controller?

I want to spray my xbox 360 controller, do you think enamel spray will last my gaming usage? Can I expect Enamel spray paint to last alot of usage if sprayed onto an Xbox 360 controller?
If you use a proper clearcoat, then yes it will. I've done it to controllers (without clearcoat) about a year ago and it hasn't rubbed off at all. If you use really glossy spraypaint it does tend to be a bit sticky, but that is fixable by getting a flat colo(u)r clearcoat.

dont do it! you will regret it massivly. number one the controller will be somewhat sticky...even if it dries. next spray painting it may get the buttons stuck etc. number three the paint will rub off eventually, wear and tear on a controller wont stand up to it.

Is it possible to use spray paint and clear-coat on a car and make it look good?

I'm a designer, and an artist, and I want to put black designs on my white camaro. I'm on a budget, so I said to hell with real paint and decals. Is it possible to use spray paint, and do a good job on it, then go over with a spray clear coat? And if so will it look good?Is it possible to use spray paint and clear-coat on a car and make it look good?
NO! I'm attending idaho state university in the auto collision and refinishing program and using a rattle can paint and clear coat on a car espesially a camaro is not a good idea...there are so many things that need to be done like scuffing and sanding the car not to mention the prep stages. Your best bet would be to have someone actually do it for you cause spray paint runs and makes a mess and if you mess up you just screwed yourself out o f a nice car...Is it possible to use spray paint and clear-coat on a car and make it look good?
I presume you're talking aerosol cans. Yes they can look good but may not stay long. Different types of paint don't stick too well unless you break the glaze on the old paint. Then the clear coat may bring back the lustre but not as shiney possibly as the old shine

Try a test in a spot that can't be seen normally, like in the engine compartment or trunk.
the slower drying the spray paint the more durrable it is. also surface must be clean of any wax's etc have you considered purchasing a detail spray gun and using duplicolors quart size paint ? its much much better and will last. spray cans will fade rather quickly. just a sugjestion.
Yes, but only if you know what you are doing. Try practicing on a metal trash can.
you might wanna try that on a piece of plastic or paper first

What's the best way to do this and what brand should I use? What the easiest way to spray paint a bike?
The easiest way is to strip the bike down to the frame (meaning remove any parts you don't want painted such as the wheels, gears, chain, pedals and handlebars). Hang the frame from a chain or rope (I've hung them from tree branches) and let 'er rip. I've always used Krylon spray paint. What the easiest way to spray paint a bike?

  • How to most efficiently get spray paint out of carpet?

I was stupid and tried to spray paint furniture over carpet, while I used a drop cloth the spray seemed to go everywhere! Please help! I live in an apartment so I would really not like to replace the carpet if I can help it. Thanks! How to most efficiently get spray paint out of carpet?
That's a tough one. I don't think you can get paint of any kind out of carpet, I know that the owners of our apartment re-painted it before we moved in, and there are little drips in places. But they were so small, I simply snipped them out with scissors. That might work if you only have little bits everywhere, and it's barely noticeable. For a widespread area, I would open all the windows and try paint thinner. Put it in a spray bottle you can throw out after, and spray the area. Then work it into the carpet, blot it up and see if that works. If it does, then rent a steamer and and clean the whole apartment afterwards. If it doesn't what does it hurt to try as you will more than likely have to replace it.How to most efficiently get spray paint out of carpet?
The good news is that most likely the paint is just on the surface of the carpet. If it were poured on the carpet and seeped into the sub fibers, you would have a much more difficult time removing it. What you need is a solvent that will clean up the dried paint but not one that will discolor the carpet. If the paint was latex you can use D Natured Alcohol. If it is alkyd or laquer based, you can try Goof Off or something similar. First try an out of the way area to make sure it doesn't discolor the carpet. Then, apply the solvent on a rag and wipe it onto the painted area. You may use a wire brush to lightly go over the area and break loose the paint but be careful not to pull up the carpet fibers. Between the wire brush, the solvent, and a rag to clean it up, you should get most or all of it. Good luck
you could try renting one of those carpet steam cleaners.

they use hot water and have a fast spinning brush.

the brush might scrape off the paint if you keep going back and forth with it. They do a very good job of cleaning a carpet.

Plastic friendly paint is typically expensive plus you'd need to paint an overcoat to keep it from rubbing off. Look into some skins or at least be sure to buy the speciallty allen key to remove the plastic overlays and paint / sun bake.

How dangerous is working with spray paint?

I want to put a clear coat on some jewelry I made, but the warnings on the paint say that it irritates the skin and causes all sorts of bad side effects. Is that only when the paint is wet, or is it dangerous after the paint dries too? Since it is jewelry, it would be touching my skin a lot, not like if I put it on a box or a wall. How dangerous is working with spray paint?
More than likely, its when the clear coat is wet, but what you can do is if you already bought the clear coat, test it out on one piece, and then wear it for a while, and see if it irritates your skin. If it doesn't do anything in a day or two, then you should be fine.

Not sure what kind of clear coating you got, but I use different kinds for my wood working, and I get it on my hands a lot, and I never seen any problems with it. Granted, its not like jewelry though, touching me all the time.

If you are real worried, contact the manufacturer. They should be able to advise you on this type of matter. I am sure the warning is just there to protect themselves from any lawsuits, but they might give you more insight. How dangerous is working with spray paint?

Before I spray paint a metal surface?

I bought a metal bar stool with a black finish, if I want to spray paint it bronze, do I need to prep the surface? Before I spray paint a metal surface?
Absolutely. Take a medium grit sandpaper and scuff it all up good. Usually they come with a clear coat and you want to give your new paint something to stick to. Take your time, spray a LIGHT i said LIGHT coat. It's no good trying to cover it all up in one pass. A couple of light coats will give you a better finish. Make sure you take a fine sandpaper to it in between each coat (wont stick to a smooth surface very well)

You're good to go. If you want to ';shine'; it up, take some clear poly to it (you can get a many different glosses in a spray can these days.)Before I spray paint a metal surface?
Prepping properly will keep the paint on better.

    Well,

there are a lot of different forms of spray paint art.

You probably either mean Air Brush,

    or Grafitti.

For Airbrush, you need a special paint sprayer,

it attaches to an air compressor,

so it blows the paint out creating a soft look.

And you probably know what grafitti is,

What spray paint should I use to paint a used baby crib?

Me and my Wife are having a baby girl, we just recently bought a used baby crib. Neither of us like the old blonde color stain and we want to spray paint it white. I want to make sure that the spray paint that I use will not hurt my baby girl in any way, since baby's chew on the rails. Any suggestions???What spray paint should I use to paint a used baby crib?
If I were you I would find paint that is approved for such things as parrots or something NON TOXIC. Your baby some day will be teething and be biting this paint. Eating it. So be real careful for your baby sake.

Did you make sure this used crib is safe? Many older cribs have been recalled. Just to be safe!

Also congratulations!! So many things to take into consideration when buying used items for baby's.What spray paint should I use to paint a used baby crib?
you should use painters touch paint its doesn't crack and it dries fast but i would suggest to spray on a thin coat of clear paint also from painters touch it adds a nice finish and it wont do harm to your girl

Make sure to go to a hardware store and ask one of their employees in that section...make sure it doesn't chip, won't flake and otherwise won't be posing a hazard to baby.
Congratulations...a girl no less...about the paint...you will not have a problem with any spray paint as long as you sand every surface you will be painting...

as the child gets to be older and begins to move around in the crib you are going to have to make a huge decision of either repainting with an oil based paint...you could even do that instead of spray painting...or you can use a high grade protective coat after you have painted...

I recommend sanding, oil based painting, then stroke on a protective coating...
Ask your local Home Depot but definitely one without lead in it so buy it new... LOL!
go to home depot and ask the guys there or your local hardware store. Congrats.
They took the lead out of oil based paint in 1977 any spray paint should be safe. I'd use a lacquer paint. First thing to prepare it for painting is to clean it with a good grease and wax remover, rough up the surface with 220 sandpaper wipe clean again and spray away
I really don't know much about this. But I believe that if you use any sort of paint that won't chip you should be more than ok. Perhaps the best option for you now is to go to any specialty shop and ask them the exact same question. The people there are trained and might be able to help you out better than most of us. They'll let you know what paint to buy, how to prep the would, etc.
i agree with others ask the home depot or lowes there always helpful but be careful with used cribs

Where can I buy cheap spray paint that is suitable for Warhammer and such? Besides Games Workshop?

$22.00 is expensive for spray paint, right?

I would like to get a different range of spray paints like red, blue, camouflage and such. Where could buy some?

And also, I am in Australia so don't say foreign stores I may not know. Thank you.Where can I buy cheap spray paint that is suitable for Warhammer and such? Besides Games Workshop?
You can use automotive (car) primers, I'm not sure what they cost in Australia but in the UK I can buy a can of Autoquest or Hycote primer for 拢2.50.

The one thing I don't like about car primers is that they have less of a ';tooth'; than GW's Citadel primers; the Citadel primer gives a slightly rough/textured coating which soaks up the paint.

Spray cans aren't much use for adding color to miniatures except maybe for base-coating vehicles but again you can use car paints. You'd need an airbrush %26amp; compressor to properly spray paint models.

  • Can I spray paint over finished wood or do I need to sand first?

I'm kind of in a rush to turn a maple end table black but I'm concerned the spraypaint wont hold against the current wood finish. Please help. Thx!Can I spray paint over finished wood or do I need to sand first?
Sand, prime and then paint. Can I spray paint over finished wood or do I need to sand first?
sand it if you want paint to stay on more than a month or two

after sanding use a tack cloth to remove debris
You need to give the paint a tooth you could just medium sand it like 120 grit or so to give the paint a ';tooth'; but i would suggest wiping it down with deglosser then sanding, that always works great, do not try to paint without roughin up the ultra smooth surface though or the paint will fail
Correct to all of the previous answers, although I'm going to tell you exactly what you need.

    Go to Lowe's paint department.

    120 or 200 grit sandpaper

tack cloth to wipe up grit left from sanding

    Valspar Gray spray primer

Valspar Black Gloss or Semi Gloss spray paint

Sand it just enough to rough it up. Wipe off the dust and grit with the tack cloth. Use the gray primer (since you are using black, gray primer will give you the best hide and/ or coverage).

Then Spray paint with your semi gloss or gloss spray paint.

    Good luck! :)
if it has been waxed or polished or has a waterproof stain on it you will need to sand it as it may not cover properly nif it cannot be absorbed by the wood.

    good luck rob

Can you paint wood with the spray paint you retouch your car with?

So we're having a project at school where we need to bring spray paint. and i found some spray paint that you use for touch ups on your car. do you think i can still paint the wood we have in our projects? the project is a wooden car.Can you paint wood with the spray paint you retouch your car with?
yes, but should also prime the wood with a good primer. Can you paint wood with the spray paint you retouch your car with?
Yes, but you have to make sure that all the saw dust is cleaned off the wood first. A tack rag, you can buy them at Lowe's, will clean off the saw dust after you're done sanding.

You will need to make several light coat passes in order to get the color to come out right. Don't forget to mask off any parts you don't want painted.

i would use two coats of paint you should wait untill the first coat is tacky then spray again. the clearcoat is really a personal prefferenceHow long should I wait between coats of spray paint?
You should not paint your ipod, it is going to scratch and chip off no matter how many coats of paint you use - even if you use a clear coat...

    But to answer your question

Spray your first layer, let it get tacky, then spray another layer, be sure you are doing VERY light layers...do about 3 coats, wait for the last coat to get tacky then use your clear coat....

    Good Luck
It really depends on the type of paint in the can. Look at the back of the can and see what it says. If it's a lacquer, just a few minutes. If it's an oil-based enamel, then a few hours.
You really shouldn't be painting your ipod at all. But, 15 min.

What can I use to preserve the graffiti/spray paint on the side of my shaved ice stand?

I had a friend spray paint a beach/universe scene on my shaved ice stand. What kind of coating/preservative/varnish can I use to prevent the paint from peeling/fading?What can I use to preserve the graffiti/spray paint on the side of my shaved ice stand?
I worked as a finishing specialist for 25 years and I can tell you that the preparation before the initial application was the most important thin to the longevity of the paint job. Since that is now a moot point, I suggest that you first find out what kind of paint was used. If it's enamel ( which it probably is) then you need to apply enamel over it. DON'T apply Lacquer to an enameled surface, it will make it wrinkle. If you could get your hands on an automotive clear coat like polyurethane or an acrylic urethane, that would be great, Body shops would be a place to look and of course, they would need to be applied with pro painting equipment. If you don't want to go to this extent, use a clear coat of the same brand of paint that was used for the graffiti. This should extend the life of the work for some time. More coats periodically will help also. What can I use to preserve the graffiti/spray paint on the side of my shaved ice stand?

i used to graffiti furniture for a lady who sold it in Camden Market.I just coated it with a spray lacquer when i finished. It worked well and also brought the colours out more,
Wow...this is a good question...Many of the products that you could use will yellow the original finish and you certainly would not want that. My suggestion would be to go to a reputable paint store and explain to them just what you are trying to accomplish. Ask Sherwin Williams.....!

Is it better to spray paint or roller paint?

I am thinking of painting my house myself, but I'm not sure which is better. Is it better to spray paint or roller paint?
If you have never used a sprayer before I would say brush %26amp;roll.Is it better to spray paint or roller paint?
roller paint you have more control over the paint.
Spray paint tends to be expansive in equipment, but better in terms of result.

roller paint is cheaper, and it is easier to tell you did a bad job.

If you have the equipment, go with spray
roller painting might come out better in the places you want it because if you spray paint the paint might get on something you dont want it on such as the ceiling
am think is better roller pain but it take longer .i work touch in up apartment all day and a do think is hard i remember when i paint this wall and the celling it a different color so what you do is put tape to divide the wall and make sure to put on the edge light Spackle so paint do not go through an the line look straight when you take the tape off. when you finish painting take tape off as soon as you can so do not stick with the pain OK so be patient and if you need help let me know ,i love painting .

don't freeze it!, as one had posted, that'll just crack the paint.

    Air/sun dry, if possible.

A hair blow dryer will help speed up the curing process of the paint on Low heat setting.

Still try to use patience so as not to overheat the paint, and allow to cool whilst heating/reheating.
put it in the freezer for like an hour

then spray it with perfume or something after.

Is it better to spray paint or roller paint?

I am thinking of painting my house myself, but I'm not sure which is better. Is it better to spray paint or roller paint?
    Buddy!

    I'm not a painter. I'm a plumber.

But we have acquired houses that needed painting (inside).

Spray it. That's the way to go. It's quicker and looks great. Is it better to spray paint or roller paint?
Are you talking about interior or exterior?

Either way, I have NEVER been a fan of spraying. I know that I'm a bit different because I can cut and roll a room FAST, and do a spotless job. Practice, practice, practice. I find that by the time you add the time to mask everything, and the clean up, from spraying, you may as well roll and have a thicker, better coat.
Pure and simple, spray the out side, roll the inside. The over spray inside makes a total mess, it is fine enough to seep everywhere. The thinner mixture is absorbed faster into the drywall, requiring a second or third coat. Also you have to roll to remove the spray lines anyway.
My new home professional painters spray everything but the walls, which they roll in. Since they reverted to this method, their finished product is considerably better than before. It requires lots of masking but the painter says that it still saves him time and money.
    Spray whenever and where-ever possible

rolling is slow and hard to hit the missed spots
with a paint sprayer...My next door neighbor is a painter and I refurbish alot of old furniture so he comes over and helps me out. Have received alot of tips from him. Always spray the outside of your home. Roller on the inside drywall, brush on trim work. Spray Furniture with clear sealant.
    Spray !!!!!!! you won't regret it sis-ta ~~ :)
If your planning on painting entire house one color than spraying is the quickest and easiest. However if your planning on using several different colors in different rooms you will be better served by doing it the old fashioned way of cutting in and rolling. Rolling still needs to be done even if you spray house, you need to backroll over the sprayed on paint for uniformity and aids in reducing flashing. If you are using more than 2 colors than I would not spray but roll.
Both methods have their plus and minuses. You need to decide withich is best for you. Spraying is not a DIY project if you have never used an airless sprayer before. You need to develop a feel for the process before you become adept at applying the paint so you don't get drips and runs. Spraying applies paint that when dry has a very smooth texture, not the ever so slight stipled texture that you get when you apply paint with a roller. That's OK if you are spray painting with flat paint, which hides wall imperfections just by the nature of the flat finish. When you spray with a semi-gloss, if you have wall imperfections, they are going to stand out with sprayed on paint. Rolled on semi-gloss will do a better job of hiding wall imperfections because with rolled on paint you get that very slight stipled look that comes from the roller. Keep this in mind: if you ever have to do some wall repair after you spray, you are going to have to spray again to get your wall repair to blend in with the rest of the wall. If you roll the first time, it's far easier to blend in that repair when you roll the second time. In essence, for the DIY'er, it's far easier to paint by roller than by sprayer, and potential wall repairs later are far easier to paint and blend in with the existing wall.
there is no correct answer, BUT, spraying should be left to the pros. a quality spray job is hard to do and the very nature of your question suggests you are less than a pro, (and thats not a put down, its just a semi difficult task to master. and spraying requires two peolpe)..

there is nothing wrong with taking a brush and roller and making your place look GREAT!

i would advise buying a quality purdy paint brush which will last you a life time for cut in, (and over the years that brush will become your friend), some cheap rollers of the correct nap, some quality paint, taking your time, and making your place look GREAT! yeah i said that!
spray paint is better ,my neighbor had hers spray painted it took less time ,and it looks really nice and less messy, then you can

touch up around the windows, doors, eaves with a paint brush.,that's the route i would take when i paint my house.
Rolling is always an option, but if you are going to spray you should roll it also. The reason for this being that spraying can leave an uneven coat and stripes in your paint. So if you decide to spray your paint you should always back roll it in with a good roller. This will ensure that your paint is covering equally and you don't have stripes when you are finished.
Like anything in life...it's all relative. I didn't catch whether you were painting inside or out which would come in to play.

    Spraying pros and cons:

Can achieve a more uniform finish if done properly.

    Less physically demanding.

Amazing speed with less wasted motion*

Sometimes easier to apply paint to irregular surfaces.

Material usage can be approx. 25% greater.

Inside your breathing a fog of atomized paint-

Outside...you may be painting your neighbor's house at the

same time, wind is not your friend.

Cost of reserving and renting equipment and having the weather cooperate simultaneously??

Awkward or careless movements with something putting out 1500psi can be a trip to the emergency room (it happens)

*Prep can be very time consuming and costly with rolls of plastic in the $25-35 range and blue tape at over $7/roll.

OVERSPRAY!!! Worth repeating...think of a nice little mist of your ';adobe sand'; drifting with the wind toward your roof, cars, landscaping or into your home theater room if inside.

    Brush/roll:

Easier to ';roll up your sleeves'; and begin when ready to paint.

Less prep time and smaller chance of error.

Can look just as good as spray when done properly

Easier to touch up later due to the same method of

application being used as was the original project. (Texture

    and light refraction)

Allows those who do things in spurts less demanding start up

    and shut down

More physically demanding in application and motion of reloading your brush/roller.

One man with a large (i.e. 2-story, high pitched roof w/ dormers) house exterior needing to be prepped (washed, scrapped, spot primed, caulked, taped etc) and painted with a half-hearted helper; wife, son, friend (soon ex)...one word.....

fugidaboutit. You'll be finishing up through fall and the first snowfall.

Hope this may help. Good luck. After all it's not rocket science.
I painted my house last summer. Spray painting is way faster. I bought the Wagner pro spray kit for $200 from Home Depot and I painted the house in a day. It has a 30 ft hose and you can pour 1-2 gallons of paint in it.. I would practice on something that doesn't matter first. Also you need to finish painting 4-5 hours before sunset, because the dew starts forming and it won't let the paint dry and then you get sagging which is a nightmare. I experienced it the first time I used it. I about cried!!!
I do both, and it often depends on what the customer wants in the end result, IE: Trim work, the design of the house, accessibility to high, hard to reach areas, etc.

Both can end in the same result with regard to the look and thickness of paint applied. I use gas operated airless sprayers when I do spray.

Depending on skill level, prep work and cleanup time, both ways can take approximately the same amount of time as well. To spray, all windows and non paint surfaces have to be well masked. To brush and roll that may not be the case, BUT to spray, once everything is masked I've painted 6000 sq. ft. 3 story homes in 2 days.

As a DIY you should consider your budget and the design of the house as well as your safety, and skill levels. You may have areas that aren't easy to get to no matter what method you choose? Renting a sprayer, and or anything like a Lift or scaffolding can be expensive.

In the end it may also depend on how fast you want to get the job done, and how much effort you expend to complete it. A crew might spend 6 to 8 hours a day on a house, but be finished in 3 days. A DIY might take longer, but not strain to finish, and have a sense of self accomplishment, No matter HOW the job is done.

I'd go to a professional body shop and ask them what they do. You might have to go to a couple shops before anyone really comes forward and gives you good advice, but they'd be the people to ask.
there is a reason people have made careers out of doing this, it is not easy. you dont just pick up a spray can and do it, but i will try to help you out.

    1. remove clear coat from vehicle where touch up is being done.

    2. feather out areas where using bondo/spot putty.

    3. using rustoleum grey primer, spray area you are refinishing. (hold can 6-8 inches away, at a 90 degree angle, cover with a 50% overlap.)

    4. sand down refinished area with metal sand paper using grit 220, redo with grit 280, redo with grit 360, finish with grit 400.

    5. clean refinished areas before painting.

    6. using gloss paint that matches your vehicles color, spray refinished areas again 6-8 inches away, 90 degree angle, 50% overlap.

    7. wetsand with 800 grit paper.

    8. buff entire car

    NOTES:

    1. Before doing any painting make sure the surface is clean.

    2. Tape off all parts you are not refinishing.

    3. Remove clear coat from a couple fo inches around refinished area.

    4. When primering and painting DO NOT continue to paint to the edge of the paper.

    5. Fan in and out after primering and painting main refinishing area.

    6. Always keep at steady distance, angle, and speed. (you will notice the difference)

paint remover is the product you want to apply.and then pressure wash.if this is not applicable then a 3m scrub pad or comparable product With paint remover such as a product called oops and elbow grease will do the job.these products are available at hardware, building supply and paint stores. you can rent apressuree washer or purchase a small electric powered unit at home depot etc for about sixty dollars which will come in handy for many other jobs around the house. you also can fix the scrubbing pad on a pole sander which will save your knees or purchase a abrasive floor stripping broom which will also work.all the suggestion will minimally mare floor. last but not least is Muratec acid used to clean concrete and flush with hoseWhat is the easiest way to clean spray paint off of a concrete floor of a garage?
If the paint thinner does not work, try a product called OPPS. It is available in most good hardware stores and paint stores. It comes in an aerosol can, you may still have to rub with a brillo pad (steel wool)

I have used it to remove graffiti and stray magic marker writing from painted surfaces.
yeah paint thinner should work, but you might need to do some scrubbing, or you could try using duct tape.

firmly press some duct tape on the paint and wait a few minutes then rip the tape off it might pull the paint off.Duct tape is pretty amazing and versatile :)

im trying to find out how to remove spray paint off my fence because there are taggings on it and i would like to remove them. How do i remove spray paint off a fence?
Visit a good paint store. Most have products that remove paint on the outside of home which will work for fences. For large outdoor projects then Sodium Hydroxide (lye) is most effective. It is applied and then rinsed off with a garden hose. I would not use the peelaway brand. Also, many deck strippers may work since they are diluted sodium hydroxide products.

Nearly all paint removers are dangerous to use (Keep some vinegar handy for the sodium hydroxide products. Vinegar will neutralize sodium hydroxide). And the ones that are not dangerous are usually not very effective.

';It is very important to avoid skin and eye contact when using caustic alkalis.

Use gloves that fit properly and are appropriate for caustic alkalis.

Wear appropriate protective clothing and goggles when using caustic alkalis.'; http://www.oldhouseweb.com/stories/Detai鈥?/a>

    ';EXTERIOR WOOD TREATMENTS

For exterior uses, a paint and varnish stripper containing proprietary sodium hydroxide can be painted, sprayed or rolled onto an old painted surface, and then sprayed off, along with the old finish, with a garden hose. Be cautious about protecting skin and eyes while using the product, however, because sodium hydroxide is a corrosive agent, used often in drain cleaners.

Untreated exterior wood, such as that used for decks and siding, can be restored to its original color through the same process, using the same chemical. The solution removes the weathered, gray wood cells, uncovering fresh surfaces.'; http://www.acehardware.com/sm-learn-abou鈥?/a>

';What's the best way to strip paint from wood? ....

A quality paint store may also be able to offer good advice when you describe your project. One product that penetrates many layers of paint is Peel Away. Its primary ingredient is sodium hydroxide, which is a powerful lye. One advantage of this paint remover is in working with old lead-based paint. It pulls the paint off and seals it in the process so the paint can be properly disposed of. It also eliminates sanding, which is a serious health hazard with lead-based paint. As with all chemical paint strippers, test the results first on a small area.

Goof off should do the trick, use a sponge with a ruff side on it, then armour all the plastic, Do it outdoors though, Goof off has a high odor....
Naphtha (lighter fluid) or rubbing alcohol is not on your list -- be careful with acetone it will ';melt'; may plastics. Without knowing the type of paint and type of plastic it's a crap shoot. The last possibility is MEK -- Methyl Ethel Keytone. (It is the basis of paint removers.) Since the acetone did not harm the cover -- the MEK should be OK. Test a small spot first -- MEK is available at any paint store -- read the handling directions carefully.

Lacquer thinner is as reactive to plastics as acetone -- basically they offer the same solvent properties.

Acetone and lacquer thinner are good. My best success has been to follow up the lacquer thinner with a good scrub using one of those dishwashing scrubbing sponges to help clean the fingernails and get the pigment residue out of the cracks and lines in my hands.
Lacquer thinner for oil base paints. Water base/acrylic use soap and water.
If the paint is oil based you can put a little gas or thinner on a rag and rub it off. Water based paint you can wash off with warm water. Your can will tell you what kind of paint oil or water also called latex.

Used it, the first time I washed it, it speckled off.

I'm cheap, and I paid for it! :(
You could... but if you do, it might be a little risky to put it in the clothes washer/ dryer.

    Hand wash and dry flat!

Don't wear it immediately after spraying, let dry thoroughly and wash before wearing.
Logically you can use any kind of paint that won't wash off.

I have used acrylics both with and without a fabric medium. Spray paint will work, though it could get quite stiff.

If you use thin layers of paint it could be done. You might want to check out air cans that have a spray bottle. They clog easily so your paint, what every you decide to use must be very thin or watered down (you might need a solevent depending on the paint) These are sold in home improvement stores in the paint department and are an inexpensive alternative to achieve an airbrush look, though if you were doing quanity an air compressor and air tools are best.
can you yes! Should you NO! you need to use a fabric paint, either airbrushing or silk screening are the best using a stencil either one should be easy to do

I don't agree with this answer because acetone will damage the faux finish I am trying to preserve. All of the question and comments should be read and considered before answering a question.

Try a marine store. Most boats are made of fiberglass. They will have cleaners, polishes and rubbing compounds that will work.

Fiberglass has a coating with the color built in. It's called gelcoat. A mild abrasive will remove the spray paint and not damage the gelcoat. Just don't use something that's too abrasive or polish it too hard in one place. It is possible to go through the gel coat to the glass fibers underneath, bit not likely.
Don't laugh at me , but try WD-40. You'll have to put a little elbow grease to it too. P.S. Boys will be boys.
